We stayed here during Labor Day weekend 2007. Sites were all shaded, large and spread out. Our site (79) was huge! Quite, very new and clean restrooms & showers. Good naturalist activities. Short walk to beach. Good hikes up the dunes to see vistas overlooking lake and Chicago in the distance. 5 miles from new Bass Pro Shop in Portage.

Camped on Labor Day weekend 2005. The new CG is very nice. Number of sites were decreased from about 300 to 140, so it makes the CG and sites more spacious and spread out. New, clean restrooms/showers, nice campstore, concrete pad at each site for RV's with paved roads throughout CG. Nice fire ring with swing over grill. New and nice play ground equipment for the kids. Handicap sites available and each have larger concrete pad with "built in" fire ring. Walk or drive to beach for a fun day. Very big improvement! Stores and shopping nearby if needed. Easy on/off I-94.

We tent camped late August, 2005. The entire campground was closed all of 2004 for renovations and it shows. Everything is new! The restrooms, campsites, playground etc. All sites feature new, paved pads that will accomodate even the largest rigs with multiple slide-outs. Nonetheless, tent campers will find plenty of room for their tents in the grass or sand (this is at the base of sand dunes, of course.) The campground sites all have some shade; some have complete shade. Electric hookups ONLY. Access to a GREAT beach is a 10 minute walk via a trail leaving the campground or a quick drive. The camp store has all the basics; ice is $4.50 for a large 20lb bag, $8.50 for 12 pieces of firewood (decent sizes, you pick them out), and $1.79 for a bar of soap (you PAY for convenience!) The nearby town of Chesterton has a K-mart and a couple grocery stores. The sites are a little close together, otherwise I would've rated them a "5."
